My carpentry education began at an early age. My parents built their first house in Granby, Massachusetts when I was just ten years old. I spent many an afternoon being introduced to all the various aspects of residential construction. Even if it was to only clean up his mess, I was still able to see a house built from start to finish!
A few years later, my dad went on his own and formed Rays Home Improvement. He decided to take his fourteen year old son along with him on many night jobs. He said it was to "show me the ropes" however, I believe that it was because I was cheap labor and that he hoped to work me hard enough to insure that I went to college.
I must admit, it worked for a short period of time. Believing that I wanted to be an engineer, I aimlessly wandered the University of Massachusetts campus for a year. Finally realizing that my future was in the construction field, I received an associates degree in building materials sales and management at Holyoke Community College, and joined the family business.
Not soon after, my dad and I decided to form Turgeon Construction. In ten years of working for a small family orientated business, I learned many valuable lessons about how to treat customers right and with respect. Many of our customers have gone on to be long time clients and some of our good friends.
